The Rise of TikTok

What is TikTok?

TikTok is a social media app, where you can create short videos. Like the sensation that was Vine, users only have a short amount of time to create these videos. On Vine, you had six seconds. On TikTok, you have up to fifteen, which allows for more creativity, substance, and all around fun.

Where did TikTok come from?

An app named Musical.ly launched in 2014, and gained a dedictaed fan base over the years it was out. In November 2017, the app was bought by ByteDance. ByteDance, had already owned an app that was similar to Musical.ly, named TikTok that was created in China in 2006. In early August 2018, the company decided to merge Musical.ly and TikTok into one, sticking with the name TikTok. The company decided to go with the name TikTok, because TikTok “better reflects the breadth of content created on our platform that extends beyond music to comedy, performance art and more.”

What can you do on TikTok?

As I said before, you have fifteen seconds to make a video. If that isn't enough, there's an option that lets you use up to sixty seconds of video if need be. What do people do on these videos? Just lip-sync? No shot. People make dances, play instruments, show tutorials, and some are even made as jokes.

Why should I join TikTok?

No one says you have to join TikTok. However, it is a fun way to kill time watching videos, or even making your own. "TikTok provides a framework that makes it easier for people to create — especially if they don’t know what else to do," says Gary Vee, who has 3.1 million followers on the app. "But the fascinating part is, TikTok is making it easier for them to become content creators. It 1) allows them to create content that they would not otherwise be able to make as easily on their own, and 2) gives them a framework they can play or create within." The app is great for everyone whose starting out, due to the fact that you don't need a following for others to see videos. TikTok uses an algorithm that shows your videos to others "for-you page". The more people that like, comment, and share, the more "for-you pages" it will show up on.

Potential Careers from TikTok

TikTok is responsible for one of the biggest social media influencers in the world right now - and she's only 15. Charli D'Amelio, from Connecticut, has 30.9 MILLION followers on the app, and over 1.7 BILLION likes on her page. What started as a fun way to express herself through dance turned into stardom. She was invited to the 2020 NBA All-Star Weekend to create TikTok's with other successful creators, and the NBA All-Stars.

In conclusion, TikTok is a rapidly growing app that gets more and more users each day. It is an excellent marketing strategy for companies to target young kids and teens. Who knows how big TikTok will get.
